Part 8
Jerry stayed down, flat on the floor like they told him. Long after they’d carted out Ace’s slumped frame, he stayed put, his left ear and cheek pressed against the coarse, thin carpet. Only his eyes moved, peering through the open door to make out what was going on outside. He could only see four, maybe five sweeping overhead light beams. A drone’s engine ramped up, rising up into the night. Two of the beams disappeared.
Against the glow that remained, Jerry saw the shape of two boots entering his camper. He kept his face in place, watching the boots stop not two feet from his face.
“You can get up now,” a throaty, phlegm-coated voice said.
Jerry did a slow pushup, coming first to his knees, then taking his time to push off one foot to a standing position.
“Ain’t got all day, so let’s get right to the point.”
“On what basis did you arrest her?”
“Her? Mm-mm. That won’t fly far.”
Jerry got a good view of him now. Hazel eyes, chocolate skin, and a dark, well-trimmed goatee testified to his humanity. The rest, the shiny chromed, arcing brackets that wrapped his face, and the exoskeletal body suit screamed it. Hybrid. And a highly augmented one, more than any Jerry had seen before. Elite Enforcers, EE, Jerry surmised.
“Word of wisdom for you, son. Stick to your own kind.”
“I demand to know the charges for Advocate 359’s arrest.”
“Arrest? There ain’t been no such thing here. Only humans get arrested. We recover the rest. Clever lawyer such as yourself ought’a know that.” He reached inside his breastplate. “But, so as you know we’s legal…” The metal-shielded hand held out a thick envelope.
Jerry took it.
“Sedition and something or other’s what it’ll say. She ain’t got no standin’, but I ain’t no lawyer. Surely, not the creative kind like yourself.” Two heavy steps later, he stood at the door, glancing back over his left shoulder guard. “Of course, you could make this your third QLM case, couldn’t you? Third’s the charm, as they say. And a prime number, too. Them computers sure love their prime numbers.”
“Your name,” Jerry said, surprised his voice didn’t quiver.
“Huh?”
“Standard procedure. The arresting officer should state his or her name.”
Still looking at Jerry over his shoulder, the lawman shook his head and grinned. “Terrence. Terrence Tomass, like that one supreme judge in the olden days, but without the H, heavy on the extra Sssss.”
